With summer winding down and fall quickly approaching, my friend Mollie and I decided to use a long weekend as our playground for an epic New York City staycation. The result? Countless tweets, nonstop laughter and four thumbs up. Here are the highlights:
FRIDAY: Yankees Game—Bronx, NY
The weather was gorgeous on Friday night and the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2. Full disclosure: I’m not a baseball fan (plus, it’s finally football season!), but the new Yankee Stadium is beautiful, and I can’t imagine a more New York–centric way to kick off the weekend.
SATURDAY: Beach Day—Long Beach, NY
After a short 50-minute ride on the Long Island Railroad, we laid out our towels, dug our toes into the sand and watched the taller-than-usual waves go crazy. Unsurprisingly, lying in the sun all day with nary a decibel of the city’s rattle and hum was pure bliss.
SUNDAY: Electric Zoo Music Festival—Randall’s Island Park, NY
If serenity defined our previous day, Electric Zoo shattered every last bit with amazing DJ sets from the likes of Chromeo, Diplo, Calvin Harris and Armin van Buuren. We literally danced for hours in crowds of thousands of neon-clad guys and girls and left with sore feet and temporary loss of hearing.
MONDAY: The Golf Club—Chelsea Piers, NY
Mollie and I met for lunch at our go-to East Village spot, Veselka, then we were off to hit golf balls at the city’s only four-story outdoor driving range. Situated on the Hudson River pier, the golf club treated us to a picturesque view of the New Jersey waterfront and plenty of boats sailing to and fro. While we learned that we definitely need more golf practice (or need to focus less on the sailboats), it was still the perfect way to cap off our NYC staycation.
