It has been over a decade since designer Rachel Comey launched her eponymous label—a cult favorite adored for its downtown approach to style—and it just keeps getting better. This season, we’re obsessed with her tomboyish twists on chambray and her smart lightweight knits—they’re the kind of clever, outfit-making pieces that you can wear every day, month or season (and we do).
As summer winds down, we thought it would be the perfect time to catch up with the designer (a New Yorker who loves to get away, not to mention a trusted insider) to find out how she’ll be making the most of these last few sunny days. Read on to see what Rachel plans to eat, read and see before fall is officially upon us (maybe you’ll even get a few good ideas—we sure did!).
The weekend getaway: Fort Tilden, Queens, or any beach on the North Fork of Long Island where I can park my boat, David Buoy
The faraway travel spot: beach trips to Cape Cod (sorta far), Jamaica or Mallorca
The R&R soundtrack: anything Bob Marley
The beach read: Swimming Studies, by Leanne Shapton
The afternoon snack: cucumber sandwiches
The cool-down cocktail: Campari and soda or Vinho Verde
The picnic essentials: I usually pack my shades (our RCxPrism collaboration), the Sunday paper, some light white wine and sandwiches into my oversized punched-leather tote.
The après-beach plan: I go buy steamers from the local market and greens from the nearby farm stand and transfer the beach crowd to my house for a dinner on the porch in the setting sun.
