As denim obsessives, we believe that all details matter—i.e., where a jean hits one’s ankle is as important and telling as how a jean hugs one’s curves. Proof: we offer complimentary hemming in our stores.* Nonetheless, we’ve been spotting unfinished hems around our offices and on the streets, with threads hanging, all dishabille—and we like it. Allow us to explain.

Whether the denim is cut baggy or slim, a frayed edge conveys a covetable sense of confidence and ease, as if you just couldn’t wait and, instead of the formalities of a tailor, took scissors to the denim on the way out the door. (You could even do it right now, at your desk.) Afraid to make the cut? Snip at the thread of your hem (there’s a raw edge rolled up in there) and take the fray for a spin.

*Free in-store hemming services valid on the purchase of full-price jeans in Madewell stores or Madewell.com.
