California-born actress and screenwriter Courtney Falsey may play a twenty-something searching for Hollywood fame in Ladyparts—a web series on one of our favorite daily reads, HelloGiggles—but, like most actresses, her real life has drifted in a different direction from her alter ego’s. She’s now a New Yorker—and a denim-loving one at that. We sat down to see how her style has shifted following the West-to-East-Coast move. Surprise número uno? She’s not wearing more black.

My day job is…
Acting and screenwriting for TV, the Internet and the stage.

Home is…
The Lower East Side apartment I share with my boyfriend. I recently moved back to New York from my home state of California. My car made the trip too.

The biggest difference between New York and LA style is…
The constant visibility. You’re always on display, so I think more about what I’m projecting through what I wear.

When I moved from California, my style…
Became more about comfort. In New York, I go for easy, which means slim boyfriend jeans and loose tops. I’ve been told recently that I have a little bit of a ’70s thing going on, which I’m into and currently trying to exploit. I’ll probably never do the all-black thing, but I’m way more open to experimenting here.

When I’m reading for a part or working, my clothing…
Is an extension of the character. It helps me embody who I’m trying to be. I’ve done full-on zombie makeup.

Being in entertainment today means…
Not being afraid to put yourself out there. I co-created, co-produced and acted in a web series with one of my best friends a couple years back, which was a great experience but also gave me the confidence to start writing my own material. In entertainment today—where everyone has the platform of the Internet—it’s important to create your own work. My dad is a television writer (he still handwrites everything, no computer program) and I’ve learned everything I know about writing from him, including patience.

Someone with great denim-wearing style is…
Charlotte Rampling.

My shopping style is…
Slow and considered. Trends aren’t my thing, fitting my body type is. And my friends have been great examples to me of discovering your own look and feel. Feeling good is important, especially in a city like New York where your image is sort of your armor.

The best way to chill out after a busy New York day is…
Great friends and a glass of wine.
