#everydaymadewell: Musician Natalie Prass

Natalie could write a beautiful folk song about having patience: She honed her singing and songwriting skills in Nashville for almost a decade before the music industry took notice of her soulful recordings. But now that her self-titled first album is finally out, things are changing quickly—she’s touring, recording videos, doing interviews, et al. What’s remained the same? Her organizational system (Post-it Notes), her uniform (high-rise jeans) and her go-to dinner (vegetables and rice). We dropped by Rough Trade, a music venue in Brooklyn, for a lightning-round conversation with Natalie right before a performance. Natalie’s everyday, in her own words, right over here…

Being on tour forces you to be low maintenance. I don’t have time to think about outfits, so I rely on a jean jacket, boots and high-rise jeans. I look for clothes with odd little details, like a jacket with a weird patch or a blouse with ruffles. My main concern is being comfortable because actually being on stage is only 20 percent of what a tour is. The rest is sleeping, reading, listening to podcasts…all at really odd hours.

Songwriting is how I deal with emotions. It may sound a bit abstract, but writing is kind of a spiritual thing for me. I’m such a Pisces in that way—half in a fantasy world all the time. My process, from songwriting to producing my tour, is based on writing things down, mostly on Post-it Notes. If something’s not written down, I won’t remember it or it won’t happen.

There’s nothing better than having the writing bug. I used to fall asleep with my guitar and my notebooks in bed…but it’s not always magical. I spent nine tough years in Nashville, recording my album in my friend’s rickety attic studio. Somehow, I still just love the process.
