What happens when you ask a group of denim-loving women to talk about the merits of summer dresses? Surprisingly, some really sweet responses.
Admittedly, we’re jeans girls day in and day out, but as the temperatures rise, we’re finding ourselves drawn to the relaxed sexiness of a summer dress. After living in cutoffs and my husband’s button-downs for so many summers, I decided to try wearing shirtdresses—they’re just like my husband’s shirts, but longer and with the added one-and-done benefit.
After a long day at the beach, nothing but a dress will do—preceded only by an outdoor shower at sunset and a slathering of aloe.
I remember walking to class one summer in a vintage blue dress I loved when I heard, “That look deserves a free burrito.” It was coming from a guy working the taco truck on campus. Since then, every time I reach for a dress instead of a pair of jeans, I ask, “Is this free burrito worthy?” If it’s a yes, it’s a go.
Maybe it was the sidewalk-melting heat a few summers ago, or maybe it was realizing that everything I loved in my jeans—clean lines, natural fabrics and very little hardware—existed in dresses too, but they’ve become a bit of a uniform for me.
I spend lots of time on photo shoots, watching clothes create moods and vibes, which could be why I associate summer dresses with feeling completely free. It’s an instant mind-set shift, like, “Shouldn’t I be running outside somewhere beautiful?”
