Florist Lisa Przystup Gets Real About New York (Hard), Her Style (’70s Vibes) and Working with Flowers (A Hustle)

In the spirit of #everydaymadewell, we’re exploring how a few girls you need to know spend their days.

You could say that Lisa’s day-to-day life is a study in opposites. She’s a desert lover living in Brooklyn. She’s a book-obsessed homebody who rarely spends a full day at home. She’s a tomboy who makes beautiful flower arrangements for clients like Rachel Comey and Stone Fox Bride, and also writes about style for Garance Doré and The WILD Magazine. How does she stay balanced? By finding beauty in the hustle of her job and, when life permits, heading out of town. We caught up with our old friend—last summer she played a game of Fill in the Blank with us—and asked her to describe a perfect day off.

Working with flowers means there’s always an element of urgency to my days. You’ve got this thing that is fading from the minute it’s cut, but there’s an expectation for it to stay beautiful. Some flowers are like that guy you have a mad, obsessive crush on: so freaking beautiful but impossible to work with. But at the same time, it’s invigorating to head to the market and see the blooms change with the seasons. It makes the hustle and stress worth it.

I named my business after my dad. He didn’t work with plants, but he did encourage my predilection for writing, which is what I do when I’m not flowering. I thought moving to New York would be easy, but everything in this city is hard. Getting groceries is hard. It gets easier. Part of that is spending a day just the way you’d like. On my perfect day off, I’d spend a long time in bed and then grab a greasy Mexican diner breakfast before ambling around, taking a ferry or bike ride and, later on, get a really good dinner.

I feel like I just got comfortable with my style in the past few years and that makes getting dressed easy. Most mornings, I stick to some version of a T-shirt and high-waisted jeans. Right now, I’m obsessing over flares: cropped, bell, wide, all of ’em, and always with a heel. I also have a tortoise shell clip for my hair that makes me feel very French.

LISA’S FIVE THINGS A DAY

A quirky daily habit of mine is…
Eviscerating two-ply tissue with my vigorous morning nose blows. (Sorry, but that’s the truth!)

Instagram feeds I double-tap daily…
@saipua, @tenthmeadow and @thiswildidea.

My daily theme song could be…
“Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie

A day isn’t complete until I…
Have complained about something. Usually about that minivan parked outside my window at 2am playing terrible music.

Before bedtime, I always…
Second-guess whether or not the front door is locked.
