Musician Adeline Michèle on Leaving Paris, Ditching Her Plan B and The Merits of Versatile Style

In the spirit of #everydaymadewell, we’re exploring how a few girls you need to know spend their days.

Parisian musician Adeline Michèle doesn’t really do the weekend off-duty thing. She’s admittedly at her best when she’s busy, and if she’s not playing bass for The Meredith Vieira Show or recording her upcoming album with Escort, the 17-piece disco band she fronts, she’s seeking out little bits of Paris in New York. We stopped by her Brooklyn apartment—home to her music room and Diana Ross–inspired wardrobe—as she was gearing up for a local show. She took a break to tell us how she found herself, and her style, in New York.

At age five, I could have painted an exact picture of my life today. I grew up in Paris, but I always knew I would live and perform in New York. I went to college for one year and realized securing a plan B was keeping me away from plan A: pursuing a career in music. Now I’m performing not just in New York but for the whole country, since I play bass in the house band for the The Meredith Vieira Show. I’ve been traveling more and more with my disco band, Escort. One room in my house is dedicated only to music, so I always feel the urge to be playing.

If I’m not moving, my mind reels. To wind down, I’ll go for a long run in Prospect Park or take a long walk. I often wind up on the steps of the Brooklyn Museum. It reminds me of Europe—it’s this old building in the middle of a very urban city. I seek out places in New York that remind me of home, because in that moment, I get the best of both worlds.

I like to say Diana Ross is my musical godmother. She completely influenced my style and taste. Sometimes I dedicate the outfits I wear onstage to her. Musicians make the best style icons: Diana, Grace Jones, David Bowie. As a performer, there’s always an excuse to buy something, but I had to stop buying for “just in case.” My style is still wild and colorful, but I only buy things I can wear at home and on stage. Right now, I’m living in leotards, sneakers and “mom jeans.” Eighty percent of my pants are high waisted—good for crazy dancing.

My daily theme song could be…
“My Life” by Escort

A day isn’t complete until I…
Feel like I have accomplished something. I’m not great at relaxing. My life mantra could be “infinite growth, constant evolution, one step at a time.”

Before bedtime, I always…
