The 5-Minute Guide to Palm Springs with Art Director Madelynn Furlong

There’s nothing quite like a weekend getaway—but when time is tight, you need to spend it well. So we invited a few of our travel-loving friends to hit up their favorite driveable destinations and report back with mini guides (think something you could read in five minutes). Art director Madelynn Furlong went to Palm Springs to bring us another perspective on the area.

You know that feeling when something’s just in the air? It’s all over your Instagram feed, mentioned in every group text, what everyone’s talking about. Right now, that thing is Palm Springs, the desert town where seemingly everyone wants to be (and not just around Coachella). ICYMI, photographer Carley Rudd shared her own mini guide to the area here, and now art director Madelynn Furlong gives us hers. Considering she calls chilly Minnesota home, she’s always happy to spend a little extra time in the sun—and after finishing up a project in San Diego, she couldn’t pass up a chance to finally visit Palm Springs. Here’s her take.

Destination: Palm Springs

Drive time from San Diego: 2 hours and 28 minutes in a Mini Cooper Convertible from Zipcar.

When you’re in Palm Springs, stay…
Near the Twin Palms neighborhood, this iconic little enclave full of midcentury ranch houses. It’s quintessential Palm Springs.

You can’t go wrong wearing…
A shirtdress and sandals with a little heel—think Françoise Hardy in the desert with her hair tied up in a bandana. Great for when you need the windows down.

Set the mood by listening to…
Indie bands like Wet, Tame Impala, The War on Drugs, Caribou and Kurt Vile.

One unique thing you can’t miss is…
Moorten Botanical Gardens, a tiny museum of desert plants. For four dollars, you can get a tour, and afterward get shishito peppers and French fries from King’s Highway Diner.

When you’re packing for a quick trip, remember…
To plan your outfits in advance. I like having only what I’ve packed to choose from—it’s really refreshing. I’m naturally a curator, so I make Pinterest boards of exactly what I want to wear.

If you take one tip from this, it should be…
To leave some time to just cruise around. You’re near Joshua Tree, Indio, so many quirky, cool spots, so even driving down the highway is an adventure. We spent hours driving and pulling over to explore and take photos. And have a great playlist ready—feel free to borrow mine.
