We’re all about clothes with staying power—you know, the kind you’ll want to wear over and over again in lots of different ways—and the new Madewell x No.6 collab of dresses and jumpsuits definitely fits the bill. See how our stylist Lisa takes her favorite piece from the collection and transforms it from dressed up to dressed down with just a few simple tweaks.

Lisa thinks of this elevated iteration as her going-to-the-opera look. “Not that I ever actually go to the opera, but if I did…” she explains. “More realistically, I would wear this for a nice dinner with my husband.” Her go-to additions for taking an outfit up that extra notch? “A structured coat and a single-minded focus on an accessory—either a killer pair of earrings, a statement necklace or a boatload of Iris Apfel-ish bracelets.” Another standby tip, she says, is to mix a dress that’s sheer and floaty like this one with more “menswear-y styles, like wool flannel and a crossbody bag.”

This more low-key take is Lisa’s “everything but the opera look.” She imagines wearing it “to the park with my kids, to work or out with friends for brunch.” The classic navy and red color palette makes it “easy to layer especially with denim and stripes. Plus, that clean, open neckline is like an invitation for a slim turtleneck.” And if you’re in need of a quick fix to tone things down, “sneakers and messy, undone hair” will always do the trick.
