Bag dispatch: Our very favorite totes

by Kari Molvar (Brooklyn)

Even though the Madewell Illustrated Stateside Tote has been my trusty companion since I first set eyes on it, that certainly doesn’t mean I haven’t found other cloth carryalls to obsess over too. Take Alphabet Bags, for instance: Designed by a British husband and wife duo, these totes feature retro letterpress ABCs in slightly faded, very cool styles. Another favorite? The oversized market totes from Toronto-based housewares line The New Domestic, which feature great geometric and stripy prints (and enough room to fit tons of groceries). For fellow romantics, LA accessories brand ban.do’s red and white Heart Tote is simple and sweet (don’t miss the removable heart pin on the strap). And finally, in anticipation of all the epic tomes you may be reading this fall, Atlanta designer Pamela Fugate’s “I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie” tote pretty much says it all.

End-of-Summer Sundaes (by way of Italy)

by Kari Molvar (Brooklyn)

I recently discovered a summery treat at Blue Bottle Coffee in Williamsburg, Brookyn, that combines two Italian loves of mine: espresso and gelato. Dubbed the Affogato (which literally means “drowned”), this molten sundae is made with two scoops of Il Laboratorio del Gelato rum raisin gelato and a piping hot double shot of Blue Bottle’s rich Hayes Valley espresso. Should you care to whip one up yourself, here are some helpful hints:

1. Make sure your glass is thoroughly chilled to keep the temperature balance right.

2. Choose an especially flavorful gelato or ice cream. (Blue Bottle features local options like blackberry honey, toasted almond and chocolate stout.)

3. Prepare your espresso with a good deal of crema (the foam that sits atop an extracted shot). It adds the extra oomph.

4. Enjoy your sugar-caffeine rush!

Beauty discovery: Bamboo hair powder

by Kari Molvar (Brooklyn)

Before and after using my newfound favorite hair powder.

I recently made an a-MAZ-ing discovery that’s revolutionizing my life and I feel compelled to share. It’s a volumizing liquid powder by Bamboo that’s made for girls who want a tousled, matte look without exerting any effort (me!). All you have to do is rub it between your palms (which turns it into a magic potion), then gently rub into your roots for volume. It’s like teasing your hair but without ever touching a comb. Plus, it’s completely weightless with no residue or powdery feel. I’m obsessed.
