In case you didn’t already know, everyone here at Madewell really loves jeans. What we love just as much is being able to use jeans to do well. We’re proud partners with Blue Jeans Go Green™—a program that gives new life to the pre-loved pairs you bring to our stores by turning them into housing insulation for communities in need. Recently, 33 members of our team took part in that transformation IRL at a house build with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.
Buttery croissants, a good pair of jeans and Saturdays with nothing to do but relax—these are a few of Brooklyn-based artist Joey Pasko’s favorite things. We recently had the chance to chat with Joey—but there was a catch. Rather than answering our questions with words, we asked him to sketch his responses. The (oh so adorable) results are below.
We spent an afternoon with our denim-living muse, Argentina-born Conie Vallese. The now Brooklyn-based artist is known for her trademark black and white paintings and white sculptures. She has one of those enviable careers that spans industries—her work is recognized in both the fashion and art worlds—and once you spend time with her, you begin to understand exactly why this is such a symbiotic mix.
One of life’s cruelest clichés is that you rarely appreciate something fully until it’s gone. Even more cruel is the fact that, in this case, knowledge is not power: If someone tells you to “appreciate this while you have it,” that does nothing to heighten your enjoyment of the moment. Take spring break, for instance. If you, like us, are stuck in a still-chilly spot that’s showing minimal signs of spring, this is for you. Or if you’re somewhere warm but still going through your usual daily grind, this is for you too. Because don’t we all deserve a little reprieve-slash-reward for making it through winter? Our team shared their tips for channeling some of those chill vibes, even if spring break is a thing of the past, from sensory deprivation to smelling like the beach (in a good way).
This year we like to think we’ve really got your back—from gifts to buy, to what to wear, to how to make present wrapping not totally terrible. We’re sitting down with our team to glean a little pro advice to get you through the season with flying colors (blue being a nonnegotiable, of course). Next up is our friend, model and vintner Michele Ouellet. She divides her time between the East Coast (modeling) and the West (working for her family’s winery, Lorenza). So she knows a thing or two about schlepping from here to there. And not looking like she’s, you know, schlepping.
Consider it the B side to the American dream—instead of the white picket fence and the well-manicured lawn, there are those whose fantasy involves sweeping expanses of wild terrain, no neighbors in sight and a general willingness to do things the hard way.
